Hirai worked as a printer for Takehisa Yumeji in 1914, for the survivors of Hashiguchi Goyo in the early 1920s, for Kawase Hasui in the 1930s and for Onchi in the 1940s and 1950s printing some of Onchi's work after Onchi died in 1955.
