Born Niigata Prefecture 1945. 1971 graduated from Ritsumeikan University, following which he studied with Fujihira Shin in Gojozaka, Kyoto. After that he taught in the program at East Sydney Techical College, and also at Canberra School of Art. Later in Osaka, he taught at the Osaka Technical College in the design course, retiring from teaching in 2003. Since then he has won a number of high-level awards and has become world-renowned.
Hoshino Satoru is an internationally recognized figure in the field after years of teaching as a guest artist or artist-in-residence at ceramic centers in locations as varied as Denmark, Belgium, Korea, Australia, and Hungary. At the start of his career, this Kyoto native worked for many years with the avant-garde, non-functional Japanese ceramic movement Sodeisha. From the ancient tradition re-established by its founder, Yagi Kazuo, Satoru assumed the mantle of smoke-infused sculptural work (kokuto) that was not compromised by color or surface patterning, embodying fluidity and plasticity.
