In this seven-part, mural-sized photographic work, David Hockney has positioned himself standing in the center of his Hollywood Hills studio filled with his newest paintings–vividly colorful, hexagonal canvases that explore the artist’s interest in reverse perspective, where traditional one point perspective is replaced by shifting viewpoints and sweeping vistas.

Hockney has been grappling with issues of perspective in his paintings, photographs, drawings, and stage designs for decades. To create In the Studio, December 2017 he used a cutting-edge photogrammetric software program to stitch together 3,000 photographs of his studio, creating a three-dimensional approximation of space. He then digitally painted in shadows and highlights. About this new technique, Hockney said, “I haven’t yet figured out what to call the whole process, or for that matter its result. It’s a combination of photography and drawing and printing, each bringing out the best in the other.”
