“Surfing the Galleries” captures the prolific gallery scene in Iran, little known outside the country, based on Zahra Nouri Zenouz’s observations. Here the artist depicts chic individuals from Tehran casually socializing in the gallery at a lively opening while simultaneously viewing two large compositions on the wall. The two paintings suggest contemporary interpretations of Dutch Baroque still life paintings with fruit in the foreground against a dark, dramatic background. The people attending the event are depicted in a sufficiently detailed manner as to suggest the individual likeness of each gallery goer, including their facial expressions and their clothing, unlike the image’s counterpart, (More...
