Language is the primary medium of conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner’s work. His signature text-based installations, such as THE TRACE OF ACTION PAST (i.e. A WET PLACE), consist of block lettering applied to the wall. These works privilege the idea over the material object: the artist does not need to execute the lettering himself, so long as installers follow his instructions. In 1986 Weiner gave this work to fellow conceptual artist John Baldessari, who displayed it in the bathroom of his Santa Monica studio until he gifted it to the museum in 2017.
