Curator Notes

...
In this sculpture, Tehran-based artist Kourosh Golnari references Iran’s Qajar dynasty by refashioning into metal, and on a grand scale, a style of tall cap made from lamb fleece and worn by leading members of the court, most notably the shah. The intriguing work provides a three-dimensional representation of nineteenth-century royal images and imagery presented in two-dimensional works elsewhere in this catalogue. More than a sculpture of a hat, it personifies and monumentalizes the shah and as such is perhaps intended to provoke debate about Iran’s past rulers.
