This sandstone relief depicts Buddha Shakyamuni standing on a pedestal flanked by two monks, perhaps his principal disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. It epitomizes the artistic production of a dynamic period of Burmese history that witnessed unprecedented cultural and religious development. It was during this time (the 11th through 13th centuries, called the Pagan [or Bagan] period after the name of its ancient capital) that Burmese stone sculpture reached its zenith; stone became a less favored medium in later periods. Images such as this would have been installed inside temples to educate and inspire devotees.
