Late pupil of Maruyama Ōkyo and considered among his top ten pupils. His father, Ranshū was also a painting pupil of Ōkyo, though originally of a farming family in Shiga Prefecture. He and his father worked together on a large painting project for Nishi Honganji in Kyoto starting when he was 33 years of age.
