This type of bowl, known as a farinheira, was designed to hold manioc flour (farinha de mendioca), which was consumed by all social sectors. Gold farinheiras began to be produced in the eighteenth century, after the discovery of several gold mines in Brazil. The works exemplify the fascination with the precious metal since the time of El Dorado—the mythical land of gold that the conquistadores imagined they had encountered.
