The vivid ribbons of crackled glaze on this bowl contrast with unglazed surfaces, conjuring images of the Mojave Desert, where Glen Lukens sourced his materials. An influential advocate of craft in the region, he organized exhibitions that brought innovative work to Los Angeles museums and galleries. Lukens was the longtime head of the pioneering ceramics department at the University of Southern California, where he guided many important craftspeople through their first explorations in clay, jewelry, and metalwork.
