Collectors Marjorie and Leonard Vernon prized Ansel Adam’s Surf Sequence and were close friends with the artist. Stephen White, collector, curator, and former proprietor of the Stephen White Gallery in Los Angeles, wrote of the relationship the Vernon’s shared with Adams:

"They were very proud of the Ansel Adams Surf Sequence, and also they felt very close to Adams and had their own relationship with him. They were very involved with The Friends of Photography (founded by Adams, based in Carmel), and they always had a wall of Adams up and a kind of West Coast tradition."
