History

Marjorie and Leonard Vernon acquired numerous works by Frederick Somner. Describing how the Vernon’s relationship developed with the artist, photographer and curator Leland Rice wrote:

Marjorie and Leonard Vernon acquired numerous works by Frederick Somner. Describing how the Vernon’s relationship developed with the artist, photographer and curator Leland Rice wrote:

"I remember inviting the Vernons for an occasion in 1977-78 when we had Frederick Sommer come (to Pomona College) ….we invited them amongst others like John Upton and Robert Heinecken. So very early on they were exposed to Sommer’s work and began to understand the complexity of an artist-photographer like Fred, who sat there and didn’t talk in complex language about science, logistics, physics, music and all the rest in relation to the ideas behind his work….Leonard was knocked out. One of the first Sommer’s they got was of a woman playing a violin, and this was a case where the learning process for them was more elongated with this particular artist. Later in 1979 I did a Sommer show; I remember after they came out of the exhibit, Leonard broke out in a sweat…he said the work was so amazingly penetrating…they ended up with one of the great abstractions that I wasn’t even aware of, Fred’s lime-encrusted wall with Cy Twombly-esque markings on it…"
