About this artist

Fujioka Shuhei produces his signature work at a kiln in Iga, Mie Prefecture, an area active in high-level pottery production since the late 16th century. Inspired by rugged and expressive pottery from that early period, Fujioka has developed a style which refers to the original models with their vitrified ash glaze, orange areas resulting from strategic placement in the kiln, and scorching by flames. Fujioka, however, updates his work with carved geometric sculpting. He generally fires his kilns for three days to obtain these effects, often losing pots to destruction in the fire.
