This work references a selection from Italo Calvino's experimental novel Invisible Cities (1972), in which the Italian writer describes a jumbled city with streets that twist and turn and end abruptly. The urban labyrinth in the story was constructed by a group of men hoping to trap an elusive woman who would run naked through the streets at night. Valeska Soares evokes this tale by randomly piling up ceramic characters—punctuation marks included—from the story. Although the array of characters at first induces confusion, the artist's premise is that anyone can use the characters to rewrite the story, or to create a new one. Ilona Katzew, 2008
