Arcueil I and Village in Thuringia (to the left) reflect Lyonel Feininger’s persistent preoccupation with the geometric language of architecture. The figures in Arcueil I (the title of which refers to the suburb of Paris where the artist lived in 1906–7) appear similar to the towering structures in the painting’s background, with their stretched forms attenuated by tall hats echoed in the chimneys and spires beyond.
