In his Light Encasements, including Untitled, Doug Wheeler created paintings that cannot be distinguished from their environments. Here, a shallow eight-by-eight-foot acrylic box—spray-painted inside with lacquer and illuminated from within by neon tubes edging the borders—marks the extent of the “painting.” The form itself seems to hover, while the diffused light it emits imbues the entire wall and surrounding space with a soft luminosity.
