Curator Notes

...
The tall lampstand, which once supported a smaller oil lamp on its upper surface, is one of several types of lighting devices in the Iranian world (also see M.81.192.1a-c). This pillar-shaped ceramic example is a rare survival from the eighth century, and the longevity of its columnar form is attested by brass equivalents made eight hundred years later (see M.2002.1.10).
