Jean Charlot was born in Paris and in 1921 moved to Mexico, where he worked alongside Diego Rivera (1886-1957) and become highly influential in the development of muralism. In 1929, Charlot moved to New York, and he remained there until settling in Hawaii in 1949. However, much of his work continued to be devoted to Mexican subjects, reflecting the enormous vogue for things Mexican in the United States.
