Monologue is one of Tamayo’s first experiments made in collaboration with Lea and Luis Remba of the Taller de Gráfica Mexicana in Mexico City. Following the creation of lithographs such as Trembling Woman (on view nearby) with the Rembas, Tamayo was eager to incorporate more volume into his prints. Here, Tamayo drew his figure on a wax plate from which Luis cast a copper plate, capturing a detailed mirror image of the original. The copper plate was then inked and printed, returning the image to its original position in the final print. The successful result led to years of partnership and the process known as “Mixografía.”
