Tejo Remy and René Veenhuizen’s prototype concrete bench embodies the conceptual design orientation and preference for everyday materials characteristic of many contemporary Dutch designers. The bench, which on first glance appears to be made of an inflatable material with a fabric texture, is revealed, upon closer observation, to be the opposite—ponderous concrete. The designers sought to create outdoor furniture that deceives the senses and plays with oppositions: light and heavy, soft and hard, fleeting and durable, precious and common. Since 2000, Remy and Veenhuizen have worked collaboratively in Utrecht, the Netherlands. They studied design at the School of Art in Utrecht, where Veenhuizen continues to teach.
