The art dealer J. B. Neumann was an early and avid supporter of a number of Expressionist and Dada artists, exhibiting their works in his Berlin gallery and publishing their prints. Otto Dix’s portrait of the dealer is unidealized, but the depiction is not without affection or warmth. In 1923, Neumann moved to New York to promote German artists in America, leaving the management of Dix and other artists to his partner, Karl Nierendorf.
