Alexandra Exter, one of several Russian avant-garde artists who worked collaboratively on theatrical productions, created this marionette for an unproduced film. This jaunty gentleman, with his squared-off features, cylindrical limbs, and graphic details, was one of a number of characters for the film, including a robot, a policeman, and figures from the Italian commedia dell’arte theater tradition.

Wall label, 2021.
