German émigré Irene Saltern began her career as a Hollywood fashion designer, creating costumes for Republic Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Pictures. After leaving the film industry, she worked for several design houses before opening her own firm, Irene Saltern of California, which became known for its coordinated sportswear separates. The popularity of casual separates owed much to Hollywood films, where sporty costumes worn by actresses such as Katharine Hepburn helped to hasten the acceptability of trousers and shorts for women.
