Graphic designer John Van Hamersveld used saturated colors, layered imagery, and dramatic lettering to help define the aesthetics of surfing and rock and roll, two quintessential elements of California counter-culture in the 1960s. His poster for The Endless Summer, a documentary film about surfers who roam the world in search of the perfect wave, captured the essence the state in transition. The unnatural glow of the poster’s fluorescent sunset lures the viewer to the next horizon, echoing the sense that what lie ahead may well be more unfulfilled promises.
