About this artist

Lacquer artist active from the early to middle Edo period (1615-1868). He is famous for his togidashi makie (polished down sprinkled pictures) in Kyoto style. His main output as known today was inro and various types of boxes. He passed down the style of his ancestor, Shiomi Kohei, through several apprentices to the following generations. His suzuribako (ink stone box) with a design of Mount Hira has been registered as an Important Cultural Property, and one inro is from the imperial collection.
