Following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt issued the infamous Executive Order 9066, which authorized military commanders to forcibly relocate more than 100,000 Japanese Americans to internment camps. Sacramento-born commercial artist Fujiye Fujikawa was incarcerated at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming. There her silk-screening experience was put to use in the camp’s poster shop, where she designed and printed announcements for camp activities and, ironically, military propaganda posters.
