Dutch Golden Age

Dutch Golden Age
42 records
A period of great economic expansion and artistic efflorescence in the Netherlands during the 17th century. In the Netherlands, the Protestant ban on certain images of the Virgin, Christ, and the Catholic saints fostered the popularity of landscape, seascape, still-life, and portraiture instead. This in turn would influence the choice of the same subjects in the young United States in the 18th and 19th centuries.
