Robert Lefèvre shows his anonymous sitter in a straight classical dress. Seated on a sofa also inspired by antique models, she holds sketchbook and pen. Whether professional artist or gifted amateur, she reminds us of the increasing role of women artists—many of whom trained with Jacques-Louis David—in the early years of the nineteenth century. Lefèvre was one of the most successful portrait painters of his generation, patronized generously by the restored Bourbon kings after the fall of Napoleon.
