Léon-Mathieu Cochereau (1793–1817) is known today primarily for his depiction of David’s studio at the Collège des Quatre Nations, near the Louvre. His composition conveys the friendly and studious atmosphere in the atelier, as young men intently draw and paint a model. The success of the painting—which features identifiable portraits of David’s pupils—is attested by the several copies Cochereau made, perhaps for some of the young painters who figure in it.
