François Masson’s Madame Roland, shown in the simple antique-inspired fashion of the Revolution years, was prominent in Revolutionary circles as a writer, the muse of politicians, and the hostess of a lively political Salon. A member of the aristocracy herself, she nonetheless espoused the ideals of the Revolution and befriended Robespierre. Vocal about the excesses of the movement, she was accused of treason and royalist sympathies, and executed in 1793.
