François Gérard’s (1770–1837) precocious talent was recognized quickly by David after the young artist entered his studio in 1786. Following the example of his master, who had famously represented key events of the revolution, Gérard in 1794 entered an official competition for a painting illustrating the abolition of the monarchy on August 10, 1792. The painting remained unfinished, however, because of the Gérard’s lack of political fervor and a subsequent change of regime.
