Domesticated Animals

Domesticated Animals
11 records
Dogs, birds, cats, and crickets were popular urban pets and also wandered freely around the city. Domesticated animals bred to work included horses, oxen, and cormorants, which are domesticated birds used for hunting fish. Fishermen released a cormorant into the water, on a leash that restrained swallowing, and waited patiently for it to catch a fish in its mouth. After reeling in the leash, the fishermen forced the bird to disgorge its catch. Small horses from Shiriya called kandachime are native to Japan and were used as a source of food.
