Netsuke Subjects from Afar

Netsuke Subjects from Afar
7 records
With access to Western works of art, literature, and scholarly and scientific materials, Japanese artists discovered new sources of inspiration for their work. While Japanese themes continued to be favorites, West-inspired subjects previously unseen in netsuke were explored. Renderings of foreigners, and of strange creatures such as camels and giraffes, piqued the interest of Japanese connoisseurs of netsuke.
