Materials, techniques, and decorative treatments were not the only areas of netsuke production that saw innovation. Carvers also explored design and form, creating extremely stylized, simplified, or abstract versions of traditional netsuke subjects. The Asakusa school, a group of artists working in the Asakusa district of Edo (Tokyo), became known for its distinctive and highly imaginative carvings.
