Foreigner travelers to Japan found netsuke to be perfect mementos of their visit—they were eminently portable and uniquely Japanese. Netsuke depicting subjects and designs that were specific to East Asia were particularly popular and included mythical creatures such as dragons and Chinese lions, subjects from Japanese folklore and legends, and seals. While some of these traditional subjects had long been portrayed in netsuke, they re-emerged in the latter 19th century with an updated feel as carvers, hoping to appeal to the tastes of their new clientele, incorporated innovative carving techniques, multiple materials, and a fresh approach.
