Centered in Italy, 15th Century

The Renaissance emerged in Italy around 1400. Compositions of Renaissance paintings are harmonious, well balanced and stable, often set up as equilateral triangles, squares or circles. Through the use of scientific perspective, spatial depth was rendered more accurately than it had been before. Although the Renaissance is always associated with the rebirth of the values of classical antiquity, Christian subjects still dominated. In Germany and the Netherlands, the Northern Renaissance was characterized by greater success in the realistic rendering of figures, objects and landscape; interest in classical subjects was more limited than it was in Italy.
