A word derived from the Hebrew "nebiim", meaning prophets. It was adopted by a group of young artists (incl. Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Serusier, Vuillard) working in and around Paris at the end of the 19th century who were influenced by the bright, frequently unrealistic colors, flattened forms, and schematized designs used by Gauguin.
