5th century - c.1540 A.D.

Gothic Art is typically associated with the pointed arches of its architecture, the extensive use of stained glass, and magnificent illuminated manuscripts. Figures were usually rendered in a linear fashion, with little volume. The Gothic style endured in northern Europe to about 1450, but in Italy it was superseded by the early Renaissance which emerged decisively by 1400. By the late 18th century, interest in Gothic style was revived. This resulted in the neo-Gothic style.
