Painters of the Barbizon School were landscape artists who depicted the countryside around the French town of Barbizon, about 50 miles south of Paris. They rejected Academic theories regarding idealized landscapes. In order to achieve a more realistic representation of nature Barbizon painters worked outdoors. Because of this, they are often described as precursors to the Impressionists even though they used very dark colors.
