A movement in European painting in the 17th and 18th centuries, characterized by dynamic compositions set up on strong diagonals, with violent movement, vivid emotion, and dramatic lighting and coloring. Baroque Art emerged in Europe around 1625 as a reaction against the exacerbated distortions of the Mannerist style (c.1530–1610). The Baroque is associated with the Counter-Reformation, a theological movement fostered by the Catholic Church to counteract the advance of Protestantism. Catholic subjects were rendered to communicate the triumph of the Catholic faith.
