The Arts and Crafts movement in Ireland was closely connected to the country’s long struggle against the British for political autonomy, which was finally achieved in 1922. In the mid-nineteenth century, new discoveries in archaeology spurred the growth of national consciousness in design. The greatest impetus, however, was the interest in Celtic myths and legends, and the accompanying emphasis on the Irish language (Gaelic). The Celtic revival, which began in earnest in the 1880s, was first expressed in literature before spreading to the visual arts.
