In 1917, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner left Germany for Davos, Switzerland, following a nervous collapse. There, he encouraged the younger Swiss artists Hermann Scherer and Albert Müller to experiment with sculpture. Scherer’s Sleeping Woman with Boy and Müller’s Standing Figure, on view in this gallery, are the only sculptures by them in an American museum.

Wall label, 2021.
