This work references a selection from Italo Calvino's experimental novel Invisible Cities (1972), in which the Italian writer describes a jumbled city with streets that twist and turn and end abruptly. The urban labyrinth in the story was constructed by a group of men hoping to trap an elusive woman who would run naked through the streets at night. Valeska Soares evokes this tale by randomly piling up ceramic characters -- punctuation marks included -- from the story. Although the array of characters at first induces confusion, the artist's premise is that anyone can use the characters to rewrite the story, or to create a new one. Ilona Katzew, 2008
