The Brazilian-born German dancer Nina Hard was closely identified with an uninhibited and improvisational style of dance referred to as Ausdruckstanz (expressionistic dance). Kirchner met Hard in Switzerland in 1921, and the two became close. The artist depicted the dancer multiple times in drawings, prints, paintings, and weavings and even created sets for one of her performances. This woodcut became the poster for that performance, which was held at the Clavadel Sanatorium in Davos in 1921.
