About this artist

Eighth daughter of Emperor Gomizuno'o and founder and abbess of Rinkyūji Imperial Convent 林丘寺. (She established this convent in 1682) She trained in Buddhist meditation and followed Zen teachings, turning her interest to the recently imported Chinese sect, Ōbaku, based at Manpukuji, south of Kyoto. One self-portrait of her remains in the collection of Manpukuji, as does her portrait of Gomizuno'o. She had studied her precepts with the monk Ryōkei 龍溪 in 1665, who was the founder of Shōmyōji 正明寺 in Shiga and also Zen teacher of Emperor Gomizuno'o. Painting Kannon was part of the princess's meditative religious practice, and she completed over 1000 such paintings, plus another 3000 of Kannon riding a lotus leaf (see example at Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC). She had studied painting with Kanō Yasunobu 狩野安信 (1613-1685), younger brother of Tan'yū and head of the Kanō school.
